Story & Influences
Simon Brock Handmade Leather Goods is the result of years of research and development, and a quest to create leather goods which combine the very best of British craftsmanship, high ethical standards, and uniquely enduring designs. I design, make and package everything myself, so you can be sure of high quality, personal service, too.
I’ve been working in the applied arts for the whole of my adult life, having trained as a cabinetmaker and worked in antique furniture restoration for several years. Since my furniture days I’ve dabbled in stained glass, joinery, lampworking and shepherding – and I still work as a fine artist (www.simonbrock.co.uk) – but it was during a period of training with one of the UK’s last traditional clog makers that I discovered leather, and in so doing found the material I was born to work with.
My collection of distinctive, discreet and timeless designs draws inspiration from traditional saddlery, harness and bridlework; from classic leather goods of yesteryear; from forms in the natural world; and from the designs and philosophy of the English Arts & Crafts Movement.
The unmistakeably English aesthetic of my work can be ascribed to my own very close relationship with England, and with the landscape, art, architecture, history and culture of this fascinating country. This spills over into my personal life too, so when I’m not in the workshop I might be found morris dancing, performing in traditional mumming plays, or trying to attract finches to the garden. That’s pretty English, isn’t it?
